Director: Shakti Soundar Rajan

Cast: Jayam Ravi, Laxmi Menon, Kali Venkat

You are opening a whole new genre in a film industry; that makes a lot of things easier: you can steer away from cliches, you have the liberty of taking a simple and straightforward script, and you can get as creative as you want to. It is baffling that Shakti Soundar Rajan hasn't tried anything new in the first ever zombie film of Tamil cinema. It is the first ever, but that doesn't mean you can treat audiences as though they are ignorant about zombie films altogether. Show us a picture of Milla Jovovich and you can hear us shout back "Resident Evil".

The opening shot of the film has a gang of NBC-suit-clad (Nuclear Biological Chemical) guys loading containers on to a truck. The containers have 'Danger' written all over them and the inevitable happens. A container falls down and the dangerous 'something' pours all over the street. The gang chooses not to report it to the seniors, and hours later, a dog is seen feeding on the spillover. The zombie film is now good to go. What is that dangerous liquid? Who are those guys? What is that industry? Nothing is revealed, but nevermind. It is understandable that the director wants to get straight down to the point. But what is the point, any which way?

The script is treated so indifferently that you don't empathise with the deaths and after a few minutes into the second half, even if the hero turns a zombie, it won't matter to you. The run-time of the film is less than two hours, but somehow it feels like the space-time is distorted and you are stuck in the theatre for eternity (Like getting stuck in one of the planets from Christopher Nolan's Interstellar).
The story is that of any typical zombie film. The people of Ooty become zombies because of some viral infection. Miruthan, a traffic inspector, his young sister, Laxmi Menon and a few doctors have to get to the Coimbatore Government Hospital to save the day. A few not-so-ingenius twists, and tada! The first ever zombie film in Tamil is ready.

For a genre like this one, you don't need a story. Agreed. But where are the thrills? Where are the scenes that throw you off your seat? At least, where is a racy screenplay?
As far as the actors' performances are concerned: Jayam Ravi has done a decent job and Kali Venkat makes you laugh in a few instances, but his jokes maul the feel of the movie. Laxmi Menon doesn't have anything substantial to deliver, but she does her job alright.

The music is a big letdown in the film. Even when visuals fail to create the suspense, it can be contrived by an eerie BGM. But what we get from Imaan is very disappointing. And the placement of the Mirutha song is shocking. To pass through the five-minute song is excruciating pain.
A potential script and actors are wasted because of an indifferent treatment in Miruthan.

CAST: Vijay Sethupathi, Remya Nambeesan, Vela Ramamurthy

DIRECTION: SU Arunkumar

GENRE: Action

DURATION: 2 hours 1 minute

REVIEW: A couple of Fridays ago, we had Vetri Maaran's Visaaranai, a hard-hitting film that was a damning one for the police force as it shined a light on the brutality that those with power unleash upon the defenseless. For them, Sethupathi should feel like a God-sent PR bonanza from Kollywood — even if that is entirely incidental — that acts to restore the public's faith in the force. Right from the title credits, which acts as homage to the men in khakhi (just like how the end credits of Thuppakki paid tribute to our army jawans), the film keeps celebrating cops.

And it also brings back the masala movie cop, a character whose every action we are meant to cheer. Sethupathi (Vijay Sethupathi), an inspector about to be promoted as an assistant commissioner, is tenacious and fearless. A cop is murdered in a place that is under his jurisdiction and so he starts investigating the case. He finds out that the local big shot, Vaathiyar is connected to this killing and goes after him. He even arrests Vaathiyar (Vela Ramamurthy, who is as terrific in this bad guy role as he was as the kind-hearted patriarch in Paayum Puli), but an unforeseen accident involving a gun and a student, puts his career in jeopardy. However, Sethupathi soon realises that this accident has a connection to the case involving the dead cop. Now, he has to play a cat-and-mouse game with Vaathiyar while trying to hold on to his job.

Sethupathi is a Vijay Sethupathi show all the way. This is his first action hero role, and the actor turns on his star wattage to the maximum. Not since Vikram in Saamy has an actor effortlessly displayed that casual arrogance that is needed for a masala movie cop. Like Saamy, Sethupathi is a mix of brains and brawn, someone who can make gangsters tremble by just appearing before them and outthink his foes. Arunkumar shrewdly exploits this to give us one whistle-worthy moment after another. Two scenes, particularly, stand out. One, where he hides his face with a scarf to attack the villain's henchmen, after getting into trouble in an earlier scene when due to a video. In the other one, he relays instructions over phone to his wife (Ramya Nambeesan) and son and protects them from the goons who have broken into their house.

The director, who made the sweet-natured Pannaiyarum Padminiyum, goes all out to venerate his hero, and there are times when we begin to think if this unconcealed commercial approach is a response to the box office underperformance of his debut film. He certainly seems to have learnt a lesson from that on one account. The languid storytelling of the former is here replaced with a narration that is spry. And, thanks to his editor Sreekar Prasad and composer Nivas Prasanna's spunky score, he manages to achieve this without resorting to gimmicks like ramped up or hyper-edited shots.

If there is a hitch, it is the scenes that are set in Sethupathi's home. They are clearly meant to be fillers between the action scenes, and while the happy nuclear family sub-plot (with cute kids and marital romance) acts a feel-good counterpoint, the scenes become repetitive after a point. The other problem is that while the villain is formidable enough, his henchmen never come across as people who can pose a serious threat to Sethupathi. But, to Arunkumar's credit, there is hardly any lull in the film for us to start thinking about such niggles, and we just go along on this entertaining ride.

We’ve already talked about last weekend’s box office king, but the other story that went largely unnoticed was Kung Fu Panda 3′s strong hold in its third weekend.

The Fox/DreamWorks Animation film surprised everyone by dipping a tiny 6.8% in its third weekend, grossing an estimated $19.8 million. Adding in Monday’s total for the four-day President’s Day holiday, the film took in an estimated $26 million.

KFP3′s strong weekend pushed the total U.S. box office past $100 million yesterday. It took the film 18 days to reach the milestone; the original 2008 film reached the $100m mark in just 9 days, the second reached in 11 days.

Internationally, KFP3 added $14.6m to its coffers, lifting its international total to $162.2m. In its biggest market, China, the film picked up $10.7m, good for sixth place and a $124.4m total. The film’s questionable pre-Lunar New Year release in China is generally acknowledged as having hurt the film’s box office potential.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Zootopia started its international rollout last weekend, opening in 3 markets (Spain, Belgium, and Denmark). In Spain, where it is known as Zootropolis, the film picked up $2.8m, which is slightly less than Hotel Transylvania 2 and Inside Out, and less than half of Minions’ opening weekend. Its three-market total was $4.5m.

Zootopia opens this week in Mexico, France, Italy, and South Korea, ahead of its March 4 U.S. launch.

In other U.S. box office news, the Oscar-nominated Anomalisa picked up $95,000 from 72 theaters over the four-day holiday. Its total U.S. gross to date is $2.4m. The not-Oscar-nominated Norm of the North earned $150,000 over the same period, boosting its total to $16.5m.
